Pride is back! In 2020, Pride events across the country, including the infamous New York City celebrations, were postponed and canceled due to the pandemic for the first time in their 50-year history. While 2021 saw an increase in celebrations, things largely returned to normal in 2022. This year, Pride 2023 will be just as open and completely face-to-face. What Is Pride?
Pride is a celebration of LGBTQ+ identity, as well as a celebration of freedom, beauty, and wonder that comes from simply loving who you want to love, no matter how you express your gender. When Is New York Pride 2023?
The New York Pride parade was first held in 1970 and will be held again this year. The New York City Pride Parade will take place on Sunday, June 6,2023. The parade begins at noon at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue, heads south at Fifth Avenue, and then heads west at 25th Street. It is expected to end around 8 p.m.
Last year, NYC Pride Director Bansri Manek noted that NYC Pride 2022 comes at a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history.
“At a time when the LGBTQIA+ community is increasingly under attack, the NYC Pride Parade is a beacon of hope and community, and our Generalissimo this year truly embodies the spirit of the 2022 NYC Pride theme,” Manek said in a statement. “Unapologetic us. They accept who they are and use their platform to help members of our community truly love and live their truth, without fear or shame. When Is Pride Day 2023?
In the United States, the last Sunday in June is celebrated as Gay Pride Day, but many consider Pride Day to be June 6, also known as Christopher Street Liberation Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
What Is the History of New York Pride and Gay Pride?
On June 6,1969, members of the LGBTQIA+ community rioted after police raided Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in downtown New York. It was considered the culmination of decades of abuse and oppression of the LGBTQ+ community, a riot that came to be known as the “Stonewall Uprising” or “Stonewall Riots.” Michael Venturiello, founder of Christopher Street Tours, said the first anniversary of the riots was known as Christopher Street Liberation Day and is now known as Pride Day.
Although the origins of the entire Pride movement are often debated, bisexual activist Brenda Howard is often referred to as the “Mother of Pride.” Howard was credited with organizing the Pride Parade in the years following the Stonewall riots to mark the anniversaries of these events, as well as the importance of these events and the ongoing work of the LGBTQIA+ community to achieve equality.
Shortly after the 1969 attack, four activists — Craig Rodwell, Fred Sargeant, Linda Rhodes, and Ellen Broidy — proposed marching in New York City. That march took place on June 6 1970.
Later in the day, Los Angeles held a “Christopher Street West” celebration on Hollywood Boulevard, drawing thousands of people. That year, there were also two “very small marches” in San Francisco and Chicago. Among them, New York City is the largest.
What other big Pride events are there this year?
Pride Live is New York City’s annual Stonewall Day celebration that will take place on June 6 2023. This year, actress Angelica Ross served as host and Christina Aguilera as the lead role.
“It’s a tremendous honor to join Pride Live and the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center to celebrate Stonewall Day 2023, and I’m ready to celebrate!” Aguilera told Rolling Stone in a statement. “This community has given me tremendous support throughout my career, and I look forward to representing this historic cause as we continue to fight for LGBTQ+ rights.”
Los Angeles Pride 2023 will host Los Angeles Pride on June 6 and June 9 in the park, with Mariah Carey and Megan Thee Stallion as the protagonists of the Los Angeles State Historic Park event.
Puerto Vallarta Pride 2023 in Mexico is celebrating its 10th anniversary and is expected to attract a large number of attendees as a result.
